BRISTOL, Ind. -- Indiana State Police say a truck driver who was severely burned in a crash on the Indiana Toll Road has died of his injuries.

Thirty-two-year-old Vermond T. Dixon of Newark, Del., was taken by air to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo, Mich., following the crash Tuesday morning. State police say he died at the hospital on Wednesday.

Dixon was injured when a semitrailer slammed into his stopped tanker, which was carrying liquid soap. Investigators believe a ruptured fuel tank caused the explosion.

The crash happened as traffic was stopped for a medical helicopter to take away a victim from another collision on the highway about 20 miles east of South Bend.

The crashes caused authorities to close the highway for several hours as slick roads caused numerous traffic problems in the area.
